Day trip to Savannah Georgia
Do you love historical towns with charm? Then I recommend visiting the city that is dripping in southern charm and Spanish moss. Recently my husband and I made a day trip to Savannah Georgia. Living in North Florida, it is an easy two hour drive across the border. We wanted a quick day trip getaway to somewhere we haven’t been together.
As we made our way into Georgia, I planned for us to stop at this picturesque historic plantation site. Wormsloe Historic Site is the epitome of charming. Upon entering the historic site, you see a long drive of Spanish moss covered live oak trees. A mile long beautiful drive that leads to the ruins.
We enjoyed a walk and drive around this tree lined drive. The sun filtering through the trees makes the scenery peaceful. After experiencing the nature on the outskirts of Savannah, we made our way into the historic downtown area. We parked in a parking garage next to Ellis Square, which is a central location. From the parking garage, you can walk to just about everything.
Restaurants and Shops
Our first destination in town was the infamous Paris Market. This cute cafe/shop transports you to out of Savannah and into a boutique shop in Paris. The aesthetic is trendy and cozy. I highly recommend grabbing a macaroon and a coffee. They also have cocktails and other pastries. After enjoying a snack, walk around the shop and go downstairs. In the lower half of the store you will see a beautiful and extravagant table set up. I wish I could of bought all the housewares.
After spending a bit of time in the Paris Market, we decided to walk down to the river front. Along the water, there are shops and restaurants. Rocks on the Roof and Top Deck are good lunch/drink spots to relax. At Rocks on the Roof we had a bite to eat before venturing out for a walk along the river front. We popped in and out of shops along the river front and worked up an appetite for some ice cream. Leopold’s Ice cream shop is infamous for it’s delicious and creamy ice cream. There can be a wait out front sometimes, but we got lucky to have a short line!
I highly recommend making a trip to this ice creamery, it is worth the wait and stop. At this point, we were extremely full from lunch and ice cream, so we decided to walk along the picturesque streets on our way to Forsyth Park.
The Scenic Route
From Leopold’s it is around a twenty minute walk to Forsyth Park – totally doable. We didn’t have anywhere to be so we took our time walking towards Forsyth but made some stops into antique shops along the way. We walked through the different squares and I pointed out to my husband Chippewa square. Chippewa square is where some of the well known scenes were filmed for Forrest Gump. All bench scenes where he is waiting for the bus were filmed in this spot. Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movies, so it is cool to be in that spot. I will note that the bench used in filming is no longer there.
All the squares have plenty of benches to sit and enjoy your surroundings. The squares can also be a great place to people watch, if that is your kind of thing.
After walking through some of the squares, we took a stroll along the picturesque Jones street. The Spanish moss covered trees and brick Victorian homes transport you back in time. This historical city definitely will give a glimpse into the past. Jones Street is the perfect spot to take pictures and enjoy a walk.
Several blocks over is when you will enter into Forsyth Park. This gorgeous park has the long tree lined alley way that leads up to the fountain. The park stretches over 30 acres of land and is one of the most highly photographed spots in Savannah. This fountain is what comes to mind when thinking about Savannah. Every time I have visited Savannah in the past, I have always visited the fountain.
All these spots I highly recommend on a trip to Savannah. Take in the scenery and enjoy all the sites this city has to offer.
Facts about Savannah
Some tips/things to keep in mind while visiting Savannah. If you are looking for a fun St. Patty’s celebration, I recommend a night in Savannah to partake in the festivities. All along the river people will be milling around bar hopping. This is a destination known for it’s St. Patty’s celebration. Definitely book in advance if this is something you and friends would like to do. Hotels book up very quickly!
Savannah has the open container policy. You will see people walking around the streets drinking. All year round you can walk around the city and drink.
Since Savannah has a lot of history, it is a known haunted destination. Take a ghost tour!
The best times of year to visit would be fall & spring. It does get cold during the winter months being right on the river and brutally hot in the summer.
Hope you enjoy a visit to Savannah! If you visit and go to any of these spots I recommended, let me know in a comment or feel free to contact me!
Wander On,
