South Africa- The land of diverse landscapes and animals roaming in their natural habitat. A country so unique and exciting, it will call you home again and again.
Currency- The South African Rand is the country’s currency. Stores, restaurants, etc do accept Credit cards and Debit Cards.. If you go on safari, the recommendation is to bring cash to tip the safari guides. US Dollars are accepted as well. Fun fact about the African Rand, the money has the Big 5 [Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard]. The colorful currency makes a great souvenir or addition to a currency collection.
Getting around- The easiest way to get around different parts of South Africa is to drive or take an airplane to other parts of the country. The country is very big so a combination of car and airplane is very likely.
Cuisine- South African food is delicious! Some of the unique things to try if you are adventurous: biltong (jerky), springbok, ostrich, and traditional braai (Barbecue) . Luxury safari lodges have great chefs and serve full 3-5 course meals. Prepare to gain a few extra pounds on a trip to South Africa.
For safari- South Africa fall and winter months are the best time to go on safari. Keep in mind, South Africa is in the southern hemisphere and has opposite winter months from the northern hemisphere. May- September are the optimal months to go on safari. The fall and winter months have the animals roaming around more frequently.
To visit beaches and Cape Town- Fall, Summer, and Spring months are the best time to visit Cape Town and the beaches. Summer months are December-February.
Booking Safaris- There are many different safari lodges to choose from throughout South Africa. From budget to luxury, it can be a little overwhelming choosing the right place for you. I recommend using a safari travel agency to help plan your perfect safari trip.
Worried about Malaria? Going on safari in the middle of winter [June-August], you are not likely to see any mosquitos. There are many malaria free safari lodges. Inquire to see if the lodges you are looking at are malaria free. There are also the options to take malaria pills, just be aware it can make you feel sick/unwell.
