Our Honeymoon in Iceland – Adventures
Iceland South Coast & The Golden Circle
Day 2 South Coast of Iceland
So you probably read about the very first part of our honeymoon in Iceland… The Blue Lagoon! If you didn’t, check it out here!
But to continue on our Icelandic adventures…
We definitely wanted to make the most of our trip to Iceland in the winter. So we decided to take tours rather than explore ourselves with a campervan. Kept it a stress free for the honeymoon. The day after the Blue Lagoon, we took a two day tour of the South Coast of Iceland, which couldn’t have been any better! We toured with Arctic Adventures, which we highly recommend. Our tour guide was entertaining and gave interesting information about Iceland along the way.
We stopped at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, which were both breathtaking. You felt the power from Skogafoss and we were lucky for the sun to come out to show the rainbow in the waterfall! Highly recommend taking a moment away from the camera and appreciating the beauty of these waterfalls.
Our next stop, Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, was one of the stops we anticipated the most. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen or heard. The way the ice hits and scraps against each other is a sound that will make your jaw drop. The lagoon sounds alive! We were also fortunate enough to see the transition of the ice floating out to sea and washing up on shore at Diamond Beach. By the time we left the beach, there was so much ice!
At this point we were in love with Iceland and its beauty, it was already the adventure we wanted. We continued on our journey to our little hotel in the middle of nowhere. After a delicious dinner with the whole tour group, we went out into the night to see if we would get lucky to catch a glimpse of the infamous Northern Lights! We were so excited and we were the only people outside to see the Milky Way and look at the lights from afar. Talk about awestruck! This was a night we were waiting for, to say the least, we were excited beyond words!
Day 3 Glacier Hike
The next morning we woke up ready for another adventure! We had a longer drive back in the direction of Reykjavik, but on the way back we had a stop for an excursion of hiking on a glacier! We met with our guides at a pit stop and changed over to a 4×4 vehicle. Driving up to a glacier is no joke.
Upon arrival, we were given crampons and instructions on how to navigate the ice. Keep in mind again it was winter in Iceland. The day was freezing cold and the wind chill left us numb, but we were so amazed at the views it didn’t even matter. We walked through natural ice tunnels and hiked up to viewpoints on the glacier, it was breath-taking. You will never experience anything like it!
Day 4 Iceland’s Golden Circle
Our plan for our honeymoon was to have all the excitement in the beginning of the trip and leave our schedule open towards the end. So on day four, we had our second to last tour. The tour was of the Golden Circle, a well known loop of different sites and experiences that we went on with Guide to Iceland. We started the tour by stopping at Thingvellir National Park. This is where you can dive between the two tectonic plates. A peaceful park with a wide expansive view.
The next stop of the tour was Strokkur Geysir. We were walking up towards the geyser when we saw it erupt. The excitement was building as we walked up as fast as we could. We were also in awe of the area surrounding the geyser. It felt otherworldly with steam rising in spots from the ground. We found a good viewpoint amongst the crowd before it was to erupt again. The geyser erupts about every 6-10 minutes, so we stood and watched it a few times. After watching the geyser, we ate at the restaurant stop. Warmed up with some lamb soup, yum!
Next stop on the Golden Circle tour was the infamous and powerful Gulfloss Waterfall. The winds were blowing the mist into our faces and hearing the water pounding the rocks below, we were, quite literally, blown away. With all of the mist, it was a challenge to get good photos of the waterfall. This didn’t take away from how beautiful this waterfall is though.
One of our favorite stops was at a family owned farm in Efstidalur valley where they produce their own ice cream. It was the creamiest ice cream we’ve had, with fresh milk from the cows they have on the farm. You get to look at the cows from inside the store!
The very last stop on our tour was of the Kerid Crater. But before we arrived to the crater, we made a quick detour to visit some Icelandic horses! The cute small horses are so beautiful and friendly, I didn’t want to leave them. We were excited to see the red rock crater in contrast to the greenish/blue water inside. Another beautiful Icelandic landscape that you will not experience anywhere else!
After the tours, we were excited to have a more relaxed schedule and explore more of the city. Click here to read about our Reykjavik experience.
Wander On,
